Myth or Must-have? Amber teething neckalces, do they work?
Teething necklaces, a mystical must-have or a hippie chic accessory for the boho kiddo? I dunno? The theories surrounding Amber teething necklaces and their healing powers are a bit hit and miss when i bring it up to a few of my mama friends. I have a few "yes, amazing, changed my life" and on the flip side there were "nah, it's BS, don't waste your money."
Marley is entering the teething stage, actually she's well and truly in the teething stage. She's showing all the signs, rosy cheeks, dodgy nappies, irritability and she's constantly covered in a wave of bubbly drool while putting everything and anything in her mouth and biting down as hard as she can. With Lulu there was nothing, nada. She woke up one day with 4 teeth and a smile on her dial. We never had any problems with pain or swollen and inflamed gums. Seeing as my girls are so different in every aspect i'm preparing myself for a different scenario this time around.
Amber is a naturally occurring mineral. It's said to have healing properties when worn next to the skin. The warmth of the skin reputedly helps to release the natural oils contained in the amber and these are absorbed through the child’s skin into their blood stream having an analgesic effect of swollen and sore gums.
Amber contains an element called Succinic Acid which is said to deliver the beneficial properties of amber bead necklaces. Historically, Succinic Acid was used as an anti-inflammatory agent to alleviate various aches and pains. Amber bead benefits are said to be varied, though include anti-inflammatory, soothing, calming and to work as a general restorative.
Hmmmm seems legit right? Still not convinced I decided to consult Dr Google and see what else i could find and i was shocked to see a huge amount of warnings about the necklaces and how they are a massive risk for choking and strangulation.
Apparently most necklaces come with knots in the cord between each bead but there is still a risk of one of the beads breaking off and the baby inhaling it. The other risk is that children can be strangulated by the necklace and block off their airway. Strangulation danger is highest if the child wears the necklace during sleep. Most manufacturer’s do advise parental supervision whenever the necklace is on and urge to remove it before the child has a sleep.
I'm still on the fence as to my feelings on Amber necklaces and have decided to put it in the "if it get's really bad i'll do it" basket. Like everything that comes with having a child and parenting you do what works for you. Every child is different and everyone has their own way/style of parenting and that's a-o.k with me!
Any one have any stories to share about their experience with Amber necklaces?
